A Brief History

I can't even begin to imagine what my grandfather (Ray) would have made of the digital era let alone intercontinental travel and online banking. That's him on the right in the photo below at the age of 19 (circa 1919) outside the family real estate business in Swan Hill Victoria Australia. The man on the left is his father (my great grandfather) Harry. 

This was almost the roaring 20s and a time of great prosperity but within ten years the great depression would squeeze the life out of everything it touched and young Ray's business baptism would begin.

In 2008 Wood & Co celebrated 100 years and four generations and I'm very proud to be involved as part of this ongoing real estate connection in Australia.

With only dirt for a floor in their office, I don't suppose Harry or Ray would have thought much about the finer points of presenting real estate for sale. My grandfather tells me they were lucky if the car didn't break down while taking buyers to the property!


My father Bill took over the business from Ray and at the age of 19, he gave me a job.

I hated school but loved real estate and quickly learned about marketing and the art of negotiating a top price for our selling clients.

I also learned that buyers could be greatly influenced by how a property was presented. I discovered how paint colors, natural light, furniture placement and even smell and sound was an essential mix to getting a great result. Fortunately for me, the other agents didn't really care and just wanted to get the sale so they could get their commission.

After moving to Melbourne to complete my studies and get my real estate license, I started selling real estate in the inner eastern suburbs and put my presentation ideas to work for our clients.

I fell hopelessly in love with Melbourne's Streets, Suburbs and people. This was where I would live, make my career and raise a family.

These days I'm based in Toronto Canada with various business interests all in the real estate space. My best-selling book 'How To Sell Your Home For More' has sold more than 250,000 copies and this website is my way of complimenting ongoing editions and adding fresh ideas.

I may not be able to walk through your home and give you my proven selling and presentation tips, but I can give you plenty of inspiration and examples to help you get your property in shape before you hit the market.

You only get one shot at doing this and doing it well so find a great agent who knows how to implement my ideas. That's the very best advice I can offer. :-)
